One thing that sometimes gets missed when talking about everyday germs and viruses is to ensure your immune system is working well. Research studies published in several peer-reviewed journals have demonstrated that chiropractic adjustments (spinal manipulation) affect a specific element of the immune system called the respiratory burst rate. This is known to create stronger immune system function, which — in turn — helps your body fight disease.
In one study, for example, blood was taken from each of the patients 15 minutes before and 15 minutes after the adjustment. These results were compared to the blood test of patients who received a sham (pretend) adjustment. The respiratory burst rate in subjects who received the adjustment was significantly higher after the treatment, and significantly higher than the response from the sham subjects.
I often hear from patients who come in with colds, sore throats, sinus congestion and stomach viruses that their recovery seems to be accelerated by the chiropractic adjustment, and this research may explain why.
Of course, as I mentioned in an earlier message, we’re also asking our patients to follow these protocols when coming in to our clinic for chiropractic care and massage.
1) Wear clean clothing
2) Leave your phone and most other possessions either in the car or at home.
3) After you arrive and sign in at the front desk, use our lavatory or laundry room to wash your hands with warm soapy water.
4) For massage session appointments: If you have symptoms that include fever, coughing or respiratory congestion, call us and get your therapy session rescheduled.
5) For chiropractic adjustment appointments: If you’re feeling well enough to come in for an adjustment, simply comply with 1-3 above and I’m happy to see you.
